Looking for a Rich Harvest
Chaudhary Ajit Singh’s son, like Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, is building on the family legacy in UP, finds Samarth Saran
JAYANT CHAUDHARY has the appearance of an accidental politician. On the surface he is soft-spoken and sounds technocratic, but it his eloquence, political acumen and family history that make him the wild card in the battle for UP. The 33-year-old first-time Member of Parliament from Mathura and son of Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has decided to take the plunge into state politics.
“Our party base has been shrinking over the years. It is my desire to go and work from Lucknow and rebuild it in the state,” says Chaudhary who’ll be contesting from the Mat constituency (part of Mathura) this time. The fortunes of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) plunged after the death of Jayant’s grandfather Charan Singh, who was the fifth prime minister of the country and twice chief minister of UP. RLD, now restricted to Jatdominated western UP, is contesting 45 seats this time.
His grandfather’s influence is evident in Jayant’s speeches during campaigns. He tries to revive memories of his grandfather’s governance. “We evoke Chaudhary Charan Singh’s memory because he was known for his honesty and integrity and we want to live up to that legacy,” says Jayant. The emotional connect is evident when Tejpal Singh of Tochhigarh village (Aligarh district) says, “Jayant resembles his grandfather and we believe he can change things for us.”
In his speeches, Chaudhury talks about change of mindset among the farmers. “You can’t force people to stay farmers forever, you have to think beyond farming,” he proclaims from the podium. He tries to put across the point that the youth in the village are now educated and they should reap benefits of education. Jayant himself is a post-graduate from the London School of Economics and worked as a financial consultant before deciding to join politics.
“My father was not so enthused about my becoming a politician. It led to quite an argument when I told him I had resigned from my job,” informs the MP from Mathura. He explains that Ajit Singh had suffered in his initial days as a politician and feared the same would happen with his son.
While elections in Uttar Pradesh are being projected as a battle between Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, the wild card might just be Jayant — who has actually jumped into the Assembly fray, unlike the other two scions.
