Panel urges CM to take steps to combat child malnutrition
Citizens Alliance Against Malnutrition, a panel consisting of citizen representatives and MPs, today met Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and urged him to take steps towards alleviating child malnourishment in the state by coming up with a nutrition mission for Uttar Pradesh.
Led by Baijayant “Jay” Panda, Biju Janata Dal MP from Orissa, the panel, which has worked on similar projects in other states, called for a renewed focus on child malnutrition in the state.
“The CM has agreed, in principle, to our suggestion of coming up with a nutrition mission,” said Panda. “The aim of the mission is to tie different government departments working on malnutrition and review these programmes on a regular basis, to be done by the state government,” he said.
Citing the example of Orissa, where the group has worked, he said, “Over the past several years, we have brought Orissa on par with the national average for child malnutrition. However, we cannot relax as the national average itself is very poor compared to world averages.”
Uttar Pradesh to launch ‘Nutrition Mission’
‘Nutrition Mission’ to tackle the problem of malnourishment among children will be launched in Uttar Pradesh soon with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav agreeing in principle to the proposal mooted by young Members of Parliament associated with Citizens' Alliance Against Malnutrition.
A delegation of young MPs including Jay Panda of Biju Janata Dal, Supriya Sule of Nationalist Congress Party, Dimple Yadav of Samajwadi Party, Harsimran Badal of Shiromani Akali Dal and Jayant Chaudhary of Rashtriya Lok Dal met Mr. Yadav here on Wednesday. Mr. Yadav also agreed to the proposal for a monthly review of the progress of the mission.
Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of malnourished children with around 30 million in the 0-to-5 years age group being underfed and anaemic.
