Campaigning in Fatehpur Sikri, Agra

At Fatehpur Sikri on 11th February, 2012, the Election Campaign for Assembly Polls struck the right chord with the masses who turned up to participate in the program. The star Campaigners of RLD-Congress alliance Jayant Chaudhary, Deependra Singh Hooda and Raj Babbar came to Kiraoli, a town in Agra district to drum up support for the coalition Candidates.

On the Campaign trail, the young leaders were seen emphasizing on the need for good governance & highlighted policies of their parties. During the rally, I spoke with some local youths and farmers in Fatehpur Sikri who came to support and listen to the young leaders. There was a feeling of being treated as unequals.

There were strands of defiance and optimism in the speeches, but amongst the onlookers there were concerns about the future; 21-year-old Amit, an M.Sc graduate said “I am an M.Sc graduate, but there are no placements in our college and jobs in our area. It’s difficult to find jobs here and college-level education leads you nowhere. I am planning to do some professional course now”.

For 76-year-old Bhan Singh from Sikri, Jayant's language is different from most politicians he has known so far. Singh says “Potato farmers from Agra to Aligarh cry tears of blood. The private cold storages have helped, not the government. The BSP government has done nothing”.

It was clear that the people of this region have a special connect with the late Chaudhary Charan Singhji. “We take pride that our Chaudhary Sahab studied right here in the Agra University” said a young man at the rally. Jayant seemed to appreciate the sentiment and spoke about his work ethic and the impact he made.  “If you want a clean and an honest government, you have to wake up. Don’t let small issues like your caste and gotra identity or regional considerations prevail on the power of your vote. You remember Chaudhary Sahab because he made laws for you that transformed your lives. We are fighting for a change in our system. There is no governance in Uttar Pradesh. Look at the economic and social parameters of development; in U.P the average per capita income is Rs.26000/ per annum, much below the national average of Rs. 50000/- per annum. You will not find an honest employee in government departments; you will not find honest MLAs in Vidhan Sabha. Can we afford to carry such kind of government and system? The Congress-RLD alliance is fighting to form a government of farmers, labouers and backwards in Lucknow. You have to ensure the victory of each candidate of the coalition in Agra region,” he said in his address to the gathering.

Agra Meeting

Another young leader Rohtak MP Deependra Singh Hooda urged the Agra residents to bring the Congress-RLD government in Lucknow to see the development of Uttar Pradesh. The Star Campaigner Raj Babbar, Firozabad MP while remembering his electioneering days applauded the people of Agra, who stood by their words and promises.

An overwhelming majority of the crowd raised their hands in denial when asked by Chaudhary Babulal, RLD Candidate from Fathepur Sikri whether basic needs like of water, electricity, fertilizers etc. are provided by the government. He reminded them of the struggles they faced while fighting for the respect and dignity of the people. As Sonu who runs a carpenter shop in Kiraoli puts it “Ch. Babulal is one who fights for others and I will vote for him”.

As I was moving towards home base from the Campaign Rally ground, I could see the youngsters took the message to vote; the villagers talking to each other about the leaders and discussing the poll-prospects of political parties. I am hopeful that they will exercise their voting franchise for progress and development!
