Clarion Call for Democracy

Fatehpur Sikri Vidhansabha, Agra

The power of democracy was conspicuous as I saw the crowd in front of me swell from a thousand to several thousand souls. Their message was clear they wanted their vote to count.

Earlier in the day as I drove along on NH 1 from Agra toward Kiraoli, I wondered what I'd expect at today's rally being addressed primarily by Jayant Chaudhary, Raj Babaar and Deependar Singh Hooda. At this joint rally held by RLD and Congress I had expected sloganeering to the effect of हाथ और हैण्ड पुमप का साथ आपके साथ. I had also expected waving flags and नारेबाजी. What struck me most however was the rapt attention of such a large crowd when the leader spoke and the level of personal involvement quite apparent among all gathered!

It was the message that mattered most to the people. As Jayant-ji talked about the lack of basic amenities for the people, I could see the nodding heads. In this major potato growing region in UP he spoke to his people about how the present state government had failed to supply them with what they needed most, Fertilizers, Irrigation and Electricity. He talked about the state government failure to act when potato prices dropped and the state failed to approach the center regarding use of Market Intervention Scheme. He reproached the state on charges of rampant corruption, rash and rudderless land acquisition and countless police atrocities. Reciting his grandfather Chaudhary Charan Singh's words, he spoke of Chaudhary Sahab's message that the corruption flows from top to bottom and hence the only way to root out corruption is to bring a change in at the very top. He reminded the public that the work of elected representatives is not just to bring small changes in their constituencies but to develop policy and legislations for progress and effective governance. He urged his voters to vote not on the basis of any caste, creed or religion but for bringing about systemic changes in favour of effective governance and hence a prosperous state.

Agra Meeting

Apart from Jayant Ji, Deepender Singh Hooda spoke about the need for development of infrastructure and industry in UP. He compared the low per capita investment figures of UP with his home state of Haryana. He talked about how the state had fallen into disrepair from the ineffective governance for the past 20 years. I gained immense appreciation for Chaudhary Babulal, the RLD candidate for Vidhan Sabha Fatehpur Sikri. He displayed deep insight into the problems of his constituents and was equally respected by the masses. I noticed how often the recalcitrant crowd melted with his words and followed his direction. Equally suave was former Lok Sabha member from Agra, Raj Babbar. People loved his cajoling them for votes though it came with an equally effective call for the progress of the state.

At this platform of real democracy I was however very disappointed to see that there was not a single woman in the entire crowd. In this day and age when we talk about social equality, this blatant lack of women participation left me very disconcerted. In a country which boasts about having had universal adult suffrage since independence, it was disappointing to know that women weren't getting the opportunity exercise their free will and decide for themselves whom they wish to vote for.

However, I am reinvigorated seeing our democracy in action. This experience has instilled in me confidence that elections today, are and can be fought with focus on the issues with candidates and campaigners urging the public to vote for progress and without the shackles of caste, creed and religion.
