Power Crisis in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi 02 Sept 2011 : RLD General Secretary and Member of Parliament Jayant Chaudhary urged the Union Government to promote non-conventional energy,

as the people in Uttar Pradesh were suffering from incessant power cuts while lakhs were even deprived of electricity connections.

Voicing strong concern about the people of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Jayant Chaudhary raised the question of poor power supply in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

“There is a shortfall of around 8,000 MW in Uttar Pradesh. The average power consumption in India is 672 units, whereas in Uttar Pradesh average consumption is 340 units. This is the situation despite the fact that crores of people are not even connected in the state,” he said.

He sought to corner the government on why it was not propagating a solar insolation based differential incentive scheme to ensure that states like Uttar Pradesh which have high levels of solar insolation, but are not attracting investment in solar utilities get their share. In the first phase of the Jawahar Lal Nehru Solar mission only a single bid for 5 MWs was received.

Shri Chaudhary wanted to know the reasons why Uttar Pradesh government did not seek 100 MW on non-conventional energy that was given by Central Government as confirmed by Non-Conventional Energy Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah in his reply in Lok Sabha.
