'Aarakshan shouldn't have been banned in UP'

Jayant Choudhary'Aarakshan shouldn't have been banned in UP'

With former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh as grandfather and prominent farmer leader Chaudhary Ajit Singh as his father,

Jayant Chaudhary could not have asked for a more formidable legacy to live up to. The 32-year-old Lok Sabha MP from Mathura, however, has his eye on the ultimate goal-defeating the Mayawati-led government in Uttar Pradesh.

In an exclusive interview with MiD DAY, the young face of Rashtriya Lok Dal talks about how his party is ready to join hands with other like-minded parties to reach that goal, the 'unnecessary' ban on Prakash Jha's movie 'Aarakshan' and his willingness to watch it, among other things.

The UP Assembly elections are round the corner. Do you think realignment in the state politics is still a possibility? The Mayawati-led regime has topped the charts of corruption and misrule. People are fed up with the loot by the state exchequer. The Rashtriya Lok Dal is poised to perform exceptionally in the forthcoming elections and is increasingly becoming a pan-UP force to reckon with. We are open to like-minded parties joining us to defeat the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Land acquisition is definitely going to be a big issue in the next Assembly elections. How will you convince the farmers that RLD will take care of their interests better than others? The RLD has been consistently raising the issues related to farmers. The Mayawati-led regime has virtually snatched the land of farmers in Noida and other areas of Uttar Pradesh. They took land at a rate as low as Rs 800 per square metre and sold it to builders at Rs 25,000 per sqm. Is this not loot? The base of RLD has always been farmers, poor and the downtrodden. We stand committed to the cause. I have introduced a Private Members Bill-Land Acquisition Bill-in the Parliament.

Several middle-class investors have already invested in the ongoing housing projects. What will be your stand to save their interests? Mayawati has failed to create an investor-friendly environment in UP. The investors in UP are the latest victims who have burnt their hands. Mayawati has pumped in over Rs 50 crore to refurbish her own house in Lucknow. She is not ready to find a path for the people who invested in Noida.

There are reports that small political groups are aligning to challenge big parties in upcoming elections. How do you look at these developments? They are positive developments in a vibrant democracy.

Whenever the Prime Minister plans to reshuffle the Cabinet, the news of inclusion of Chaudhary Ajit Singh starts making rounds. Why does your party maintain silence over the issue rather than clarifying it? (Smiles) This is the creation of media. We cannot stand to comment on everything that is being said in the media.

Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Varun Gandhi and Jayant Choudhary-all are representatives of the younger generation of big political leaders. How do you find yourself different from the rest? Everyone has a different approach and mindset. I stand to represent the marginalised.

In addition to politics, what are the other areas of your interest? I listen to music, play chess and follow cricket, whenever I can.

The UP government has banned the release of the film 'Aarakshan'. What is your reaction to this? Will you watch the movie? I will watch it if I get a chance. I am not in favour of unnecessary censorship by the government. At the same time, I don't know what the film is about or the values it represent.

Have you ever had a conflict of opinion on any issue of public interest with your father? (Laughs) Oh! All of us have differences with our fathers. That is natural. Don't you think so? Human capacity to learn never dies and I have a lot to gain from his experiences.
